Guidelines for the CSAT Co-Occurring Dialogues
Discussion List

A. Purpose
B. Membership
C. Guidelines for posting messages
D. How to unsubscribe
E. How to use the Web interface
F. How to get help

  1. Purpose
  2. The Co-Occurring Dialogues Discussion List is an open, but moderated, vehicle sponsored by the Division of State and Community Assistance (DSCA) at CSAT. It is designed to aid communication among researchers, educators, treatment agencies, the recovery community, treatment providers, and all levels of government. This List focuses on ideas, questions, announcements, and concerns specific to the field of dual diagnosis (co-occurring disorder) treatment. Dual diagnosis is defined as a mental disorder and substance abuse. Related issues include learning disabilities, HIV/AIDS, and other medical conditions.

  3. Membership
  4. Subscription and posting to the Co-Occurring Dialogues Discussion List is unrestricted, but content and appropriateness will be moderated. CSAT reserves the right to remove subscribers for inappropriate postings.

  5. Guidelines for posting messages

    1. Only subscribed users are invited to post messages. To post a message to all the current Co-Occurring Dialogues subscribers, use the address: dualdx@treatment.org. Please help keep the list viable (and legible) by doing the following:

      • When you are replying to a threaded message (one that has several poster's messages in it), please delete all but the most relevant sections of the thread, leaving enough so people will know to what you are referring. These very long threads become difficult to follow, and many people just skip them (especially digest members).

      • Please use plain text when posting to the list. The list cannot accept messages with attachments, HTML coding, Bold, italics, Underline, Colors, pictures, and the like. Most e-mail programs have a Plain Text option in the format menu. AOL automatically uses HTML coding by default so you have to turn it OFF. Outlook users who have Word set as their e-mail editor have a drop-down box at the top of the menu from which Plain Text, Rich Text, or HTML can be selected -- please choose Plain Text. Gmail webmail has a "Plain Text" link at the top of the composing pane - click it to post in plain text. If other e-mail program users will submit instructions on how to use plain text in their programs to listadmin@treatment.org, these will be posted on this page after testing.

      • If you set your e-mail to deliver an automatic "out-of-office" message, see if it has the option to have it only go to e-mail that is addressed to just you. This keeps the list from getting numerous out-of-office messages that clog the approval mailbox.

    2. Keep postings within the scope of the List. The Co-Occurring Dialogues Discussion List should be used for messages of professional interest to persons in the dual diagnosis treatment field. Postings to this List should be limited to issues that are specific to dual diagnosis treatment or to the improvement of the health of those undergoing such treatment. Replies should add to the dialogue, not just reiterate what the previous posters have said (also, see number 6 below). Brief announcements of professional co-occurring resources that refer readers to another location for more information are acceptable. However, no ongoing self-promotion, advertising of services or facilities, or lobbying will be permitted. Any subscriber who violates these rules may be removed from the list.

    3. Always use a descriptive subject line. The more descriptive you are, the more likely it is the right people will read and respond to your posting.

    4. Be brief -- keep paragraphs and messages short and to the point. PLEASE, DO NOT SEND ATTACHMENTS TO THE LIST. Instead, include a brief document within the body of your message. For lengthy documents, please describe the document and give instructions for retrieving it or offer to send it only to those interested. For conference announcements, send a brief message with an e-mail address or Web address for further information.

    5. Always give your postings a full signature. Include your name, affiliation, and e-mail address. We ask you to include your e-mail address in the body of the message because some e-mail programs do not display it in list messages. Add it to your automatic message "signature" as the easiest way to do this - you won't have to remember every time that way. If you ask in your message for people to contact you "back channel" or "off the list" and you e-mail address is not in the message body, your message will be returned to you for correction.

    6. The Co-Occurring Dialogues Discussion List is configured so that replies are sent to all members, not just to the individual who posted the message. Personal replies should be sent directly to the individual.

      To send a personal reply, hit the "Forward" button and manually insert the individual's address, which appears at the end of the message, in the "To" field. Examples of messages that should be sent to an individual:

      1. All requests for copies of offered materials;
      2. Send your "Thank you," "I agree," and "Good for you" messages to the individual you wish to praise, unless they are intended to halt other list members from continuing to fill a request;
      3. Survey responses.

    7. Read all the incoming mail from the List before responding; someone may have already sent a reply similar to yours.

    8. CSAT assumes no responsibility for the opinions and information posted by users.

  6. How to unsubscribe or set your subscription to digest mode

    1. To unsubscribe, send an email to the address posted at the end of a recent email message that you have received from the list. Then follow the instructions you will receive in the automatic message you will receive in reply.

    2. To set your subscription to digest mode, (one longer message that includes all postings of the day) -- Send an e-mail to the digest address posted at the end of a recent email message that you have received from the list, then follow the instructions in the automatic message you will receive in reply.

  7. How to read archived messages (list subscribers only)

    1. Send an e-mail to dualdx-confirm@treatment.org. You will receive a return e-mail message with a confirmation number.

    2. Go to this link http://list.treatment.org/Lists/dualdx/List.html

    3. On that page, click on the link that says "Mailing Lists". You will then be asked for a username and password.

    4. Enter your full e-mail address as your username and the confirmation number you received (see number E.1) as your password. Be sure to use the e-mail address to which you have the subscription for this list sent.

    5. You will now have access to the archived messages for the current year.

  8. How to get help
  9. Co-Occurring Dialogues Discussion List subscribers who have technical questions about the list should send an e-mail to: listadmin@treatment.org. In the e-mail please include information about what you are trying to do, and what happens when you do it. Please include any error messages you may have received. List moderators will do their best to resolve your issue.
